Building STEPS helps Baltimore City kids go to college and earn a degree.
Building STEPS is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit built on one simple principle; a college education changes a person’s life. The multi-year program, supplementing students’ classroom learning, exposes bright, underserved high school students to science and technology-based careers, and helps them excel in these fields where minorities are overwhelmingly underrepresented.
Eighty-four percent of Building STEPS graduates earn a college degree, almost all of whom are the first to do so in their family.
Building STEPS (Science Technology And Education Partnerships Inc.) was founded in 1995 in Washington, DC, by Matthew Weinberg, CEO of The Weinberg Group. Matthew brought his start-up nonprofit to Baltimore in 2000 with the idea and vision to help minority high school students become science and technology professionals, with the first entre point as college. Building STEPS started with 16 high school juniors. Today, serving more than 100 high school students and 350 alumni each year, Building STEPS has become a force stretching from high school to career professionals.
