We believe a college education changes
a person’s life.
“Building STEPS came into my life at a time when I had no real direction lined up for life after school. It made me think about college and what I wanted to do with my life all while teaching me critical skills in the process. Without Building STEPS, I don’t know if I would’ve even applied to the University of Maryland. For that, I am forever grateful.”
-Tim B., Digital Harbor ‘09, UMD BS in Kinesiology ’14
Building STEPS students are bright, and nearly all are first-generation college students, attending challenging Baltimore City high schools.
Nearly 22 percent of Baltimore City residents live in poverty, and only 9 percent of Baltimore City high school graduates earn a college degree.
Despite these circumstances, Building STEPS students are motivated, persistent, and successful. We unlock potential and propel progress; with our support, 80 percent of Building STEPS students earn a college degree.
